P-complete

3-Oriented Weighted Planar Partitioning (3OWPP)

Category: Geometry

Input

A set of nonintersecting line segments $s_1, \ldots, s_n$ in the Euclidean plane ($\R \times \R$), a set of associated integer weights $w_1, \ldots, w_n$, and two designated segments $r$ and $t$. The segments are 3-oriented meaning that there are only three different possible slopes for the segments.

Problem

Do segments $r$ and $t$ “touch” in the partitioning of the plane constructed by extending segments in the order of their weights? Segments are extended until they reach another segment or a previous segment extension.

Status

$\P$-complete (Atallah, Callahan, and Goodrich [1]).

Remarks

It is easy to see that the process of extending the segments can be performed in polynomial time. The reduction to show hardness is from the same variant of PCVP as in PST.

The complexity of the 2-oriented version of the problem is open [1]. In [1] they remark that the problem has been reduced to an instance of MCVP that has a very restricted topology, although not planar. Thus, it is open whether or not this version of the problem is in $\NC$.
