P-complete

Maximum Satisfiability Approximation (MSA)

Input

A Boolean formula $F$ with clauses $c_1, \ldots, c_m$ and variables $x_1, \ldots, x_n$, plus an integer $l$.

Problem

Does variable $x_l$ get assigned a value true by the maximum satisfiability approximation algorithm?

Definitions

The algorithm is sketched below. Its input is the same as for MSA.

\[ \begin{aligned} &\text{begin} \\ &\quad \text{for } i \leftarrow 1 \text{ to } n \text{ do} \\ &\qquad \text{for } j \leftarrow 1 \text{ to } m \text{ do} \\ &\qquad\qquad f_T(i,j) \leftarrow \text{the fraction of truth assignments for the remaining} \\ &\qquad\qquad\qquad \text{variables of clause } j \text{ that satisfy clause } j \text{ with } x_i \text{ set to true} \\ &\qquad\qquad f_F(i,j) \leftarrow 1 - f_T(i,j) \\ &\qquad \text{if } \sum_{j=1}^{m} f_T(i,j) \ge \sum_{j=1}^{m} f_F(i,j) \text{ then} \\ &\qquad\qquad x_i \leftarrow \text{true} \\ &\qquad \text{else} \\ &\qquad\qquad x_i \leftarrow \text{false} \\ &\qquad \text{update the clauses} \\ &\text{end} \end{aligned} \]

Status

$\P$-complete (Bongiovanni, Crescenzi, and De Agostino [1]).

Remarks

The reduction to show hardness is from a variant of CVP consisting of OR and NOT gates. The algorithm specified above $1/2$-approximates MSA. The result shows that this sequential algorithm for approximating Maximum Satisfiability is unlikely to be made feasibly highly parallel.
