Minimum Set Cover Approximation (MSCA)

Input

A finite set $S$, a collection $C$ of subsets of $S$, a special subset $t$ of $S$, and an integer $i$.

Problem

Is $t$ a subset of $s’$, where $s’$ is the $i^\text{th}$ set chosen by the minimum set cover approximation algorithm?

Definitions

A set cover is a collection of sets $C’$ such that each element of $S$ is contained in at least one set from $C’$. A minimum set cover is a set cover of smallest cardinality. The minimum set cover approximation algorithm is outlined below. Its input is the same as for MSCA.

\[ \begin{aligned} &\text{begin} \\ &\quad \text{solution} \leftarrow \varnothing \\ &\quad \text{uncovered} \leftarrow S \\ &\quad \text{while } \text{uncovered} \neq \varnothing \text{ do} \\ &\qquad \text{choose } s' \text{ a ``remaining set'' from } C \text{ such that } |s'| \text{ is maximized} \\ &\qquad \text{solution} \leftarrow \text{solution} \cup \text{index}(s') \\ &\qquad \text{uncovered} \leftarrow \text{uncovered} \setminus s' \\ &\qquad \text{remove the elements of } s' \text{ from all remaining sets} \\ &\quad \text{end} \end{aligned} \]

Status

$\P$-complete (Bongiovanni, Crescenzi, and De Agostino [1]).

Remarks

The reduction to show hardness is from a variant of CVP that consists of OR and NOT gates. The Minimum Set Cover Problem is $\NP$-complete (Garey and Johnson [2]). The algorithm specified above $\log$-approximates MSCA. The result shows that this sequential algorithm for approximating Minimum Set Cover is unlikely to be made feasibly highly parallel.
