Maximal Vertex Disjoint Paths (PATHS)
Category: Searching Graphs
Input
An undirected graph $G = (V, E)$, a subset $U \subseteq V$, an integer $k$, and a designated vertex $v$.
Problem
Is vertex $v$ on the $k^\text{th}$ path found when constructing paths greedily from vertices in $U$? The paths are formed by taking lexicographically first paths from vertices in $U$. The set is maximal in the sense that no more paths joining vertices in $U$ can be added.
Status
$\P$-complete (Anderson [1]).
Remarks
The reduction to show hardness is from a restricted version of CVP.
The construction of maximal sets of vertex disjoint paths is important for developing fast, parallel, randomized algorithms for depth-first search (Aggarwal and Anderson [2], Aggarwal, Anderson, and Kao [3]). See DFS and MDP.
