P-hard

Traveling Salesman 2-Opt (TS2Opt)

Input

A finite set $C = \{C_1, \ldots, C_n\}$ of cities, and a distance matrix $D$ with entries $d_{ij}$ that are positive integers ($1 \leq i, j \leq n$), and an initial tour $T_0$.

Problem

Find a sequence of tours $T_0, \ldots, T_m$ such that $T_i$ is the result of a 2-opt of $T_{i-1}$, the cost of $T_i$ is less than the cost of $T_{i-1}$, and either $T_m$ is a locally optimal tour or $m \geq n$.

Definitions

A 2-opt refers to a neighborhood transformation done on the tours, see Lin and Kernighan [1].

Status

$\P$-complete (Anderson [2]).

Remarks

The reduction to show hardness is from a variant of CVP. See also NNTSH.
